Established in 1987, TSMC is the world's first dedicated semiconductor foundry. In today's developed countries, 20% of energy demand comes from lighting applications. "Green Business" has become an important goal for corporations and installing energy-efficient lighting has emerged as one of the key initiatives. Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology delivers 5 to 10 times higher light emitting efficacy than traditional incandescent bulbs and 10 times longer life while using more eco-friendly materials. An LED emits light through solid-state electroluminescence. Traditional incandescent bulbs use thermal radiation and create lower lighting efficacy. Solid-state lighting technology offers much greater potential than other lighting technologies to save energy and enhance the quality of our environment.

Technology
TSMC develops LED technology on silicon wafers to capitalize on silicon's ultra low thermal resistance and potential for integrating LEDs with integrated circuit (IC) functionality. TSMC's LED chip and packaging processes are executed at the wafer level (eight-inch silicon wafer), rather than the individual LED chip level to create significant potential cost reduction. TSMC integrates process steps from epi growth, chip formation and packaging to lens molding and complete processes at the wafer level. TSMC has developed this unique integrated process to fully capitalize on our expertise and experience with silicon-based manufacturing to deliver a fast ramp, high yield and narrow bin distribution.
TSMC Lighting plans delivering leading LED thermal resistance performance by 2011 and leading light emitting efficacy in 2012.
Manufacturing
TSMC will serve its global customers with LEDs produced in its own fab. TSMC's LED fab is located in the Hsin-Chu Science Park, Taiwan. The company has invested US$80 million to complete the facility's first phase and moved in the first equipment in during September 2010. Commercial production is expected to commence in the second half of 2011.

TSMC will first focus on luminaire solutions for retrofit lamps, commercial and industrial lighting, architectural lighting, and outdoor lighting.
