In the fast changing and highly competitive international economy, professionals with global exposure are essential for the survival of the Taiwan businesses. Hence helping develop talented people for the society is one of TSMC's key responsibilities as a corporate citizen.
TSMC designs various programs to focus on different aspects of education at different age levels. At primary schools, our focus is on the aesthetic education, with the goal to expose children to arts as early as possible and bridge the gap between rural and urban areas. In 2001 TSMC Education and Culture Foundation launched "TSMC Esthetic Education Tour". Every year the project organizes tours for children from the rural areas throughout Taiwan to visit the National Palace Museums and other fine arts institutes. In 2009, The Foundation also sponsored "The Smiling Kingdom - The Terracotta Warriors of Han Yang Ling "" to give the children in remote townships the opportunities to appreciate Chinese traditional arts.
For secondary schools, our focus is to develop students' potential in both science and humanity. The Foundation has been sponsoring ''Wu Chien-Shiung Science Camp" and "Wu Ta-You Science Camp" providing gifted youths the opportunity to engage in dialogue with world-class scientists as well as work closely with other promising young scholars. The Foundation aims to inspire and nurture future scientists through intensive training at the science camps. Meanwhile, the Foundation also held "TSMC Youth Literature Awards" and "TSMC Youth Calligraphy Awards" to encourage students to compete and learn from each other and enrich their love of the humanities.
At the college level, we target global perspectives so that they can compete in global economy. Recognizing the need for visionary training programs, TSMC directs our recourses towards the donations for university scholarships, chair professorships and facilities, while emphasizing an international perspective. TSMC donated NT$180 million to National Tsing-Hua University to establish the School of Technology Management, TSMC Hall, which was completed in 2008. We also donated NT$120 million to National Taiwan University to build a new research center of Chemistry Department, which will be completed in the end of 2009. In addition, the Foundation also supports "TSMC Chair Professorship and "Morris Chang Chair Professorship", which invites internationally renowned professors to lecture in Taiwan. With their academic abilities and vision, these scholars have led students and researchers into the most advanced research.
To encourage and support outstanding students with financial needs and to help bridge the gap in educational resources caused by disparities in wealth, the Foundation continued to provide the TSMC Scholarship for students with financial needs. And to narrow the gap in educational resources between rural and urban areas, the TSMC foundation continued to sponsor the Hope Reading Program initiated by the Common Wealth Educational Foundation. By providing 25,000 students in remote and underprivileged areas of Taiwan with 75,000 books, we hope promote literacy and inspire interest in reading among these children so that they will have good books to read and the opportunity to one day leave poverty.
